Red means “STOP”, and green means “GO.”
It’s such a universal concept, it is arguably the simplest, most direct method for communicating GPR findings when precision is paramount. When it comes to illustrating results from a Ground-Penetrating Radar survey, providing clearly marked, green “safe” zones can mean the difference between a successful cut and a dangerous risk.
Structural Radar Imaging uses an established color-coding system to clearly communicate our findings with our customers, especially when it’s necessary to provide information beyond whether an area is just “safe” or “not safe” for cutting.
Our technicians are trained to distinguish between the most commonly sought-out subsurface items: rebar, plastic conduits and post-tension cables. Depending on depth changes, additional marking techniques may be employed, but most often, marking rebar in black, conduit in yellow and cables in red provides sufficient information about the items and their threat levels; green “safe” areas are only provided when a location can be verified as completely safe and clear of any embedded items.
While the selected colors and/or styles may change depending on the surface and marking tools permitted, the final code is always reiterated in the written summary provided to the customer at the completion of each job.
So remember, the key to a successful scanning project is clear communication. Overall, on-surface color coding can drastically improve cutting outcomes by:
- Ensuring findings are readily understood by all construction teams
- Clearly relaying information to concrete cutters even when the scanning technician is not on-site at the time of cutting
- Reducing the need for additional in-depth and time-consuming technical reports
